Justice William O. Douglas #79, Justice Frank Murphy #80
Justice William O. Douglas #79 (1898-1980) Douglas autographed an undated 4 x 5 card. There are two photographs of this Justice who shows he has fully recovered from polio. Douglas’ past was merely being impoverished and received the honor from Justice Louis Brandeis for recommending to the President that Douglas be considered as his replacement. He eventually became the Courts longest serving member. He also wrote the most books, suffered the most divorces, engaged in the most marriages, endured the most attempts to impeach him (4). He wrote the most decisions and wrote the most dissents.
Justice Frank Murphy #80 (1890-1949) on March 15, 1937, Frank Murphy, Governor of the State of Michigan signs and dates his signature. On this board Murphy is depicted as dressed for a night on the town in a tuxedo and a top hat. Murphy was nominated to the Court by Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Murphy died a member of the Court 9 years later in 1949.
