Justice John Marshall Harlan #89 (1899-1971). Justice Harlan autographs a letter on Supreme Court letterhead dated May 14, 1960, thanking one William Stanhope for the birthday wish. There are three photographs: one displaying the Justice in his robes, one a candid shot of the Justice in a suit, and a picture of the Justice as the newest member of the Earl Warren Court.

This Justice followed his grandfather onto the court. (although, there was a father-in-law and son-in-law on the court this appears the only instance in Supreme Court history where close blood relatives took seats on the court.

There is included a first day issue card as the “flag flies over the supreme court” postmarked December 19, 1991. Harlan served the court for more than 16 years before retiring and was nominated to the court by Dwight D. Eisenhower.
