Charles Evans hughes #62(1862-1948) JUSTICE HUGHES SERVED ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASSIONS; THEY ARE: ASSOCIATE JUSTICE 1910-1916 RESIGNED: 1930-1941 11TH CHIEF JUSTICE RETIRED. HUGHES SEEMS ALWAYS TO BE DRESSED FOR A party and this is again reflected on this board he is shown here in a tuxedo and top hat with his wife Antoinette and in another photo in a tuxedo. He served us on the court twice and in the interim ran for president in a losing cause. He had much to say.
Also depicted on the same board Is justice Willis van Devanter #63 (1859-1941) nominated by president Taft who was also the president who nominated hughes as chief. Van Devanter served for 26 years. He would have probably retired 5 years before but congress had suspended retirement benefits for a time. The board shows van Devanter in his chambers and as a farmer on his farm. Both justices submit a court chambers card bearing their name. chief hughes leaves his undated where justice van Devanter dates his effort as May 17, 1937.
