Future 12th Chief Justice Harlan F. Stone #73 autographs a prepared Chambers Card dated April 15, 1931. (He did not become Chief until 1941, 10 years after he executed this card.) Owen Roberts autographs a letter on January 8, 1943 (two years before his retirement) to J. F. T. O’Connor the same United States District Court Judge from Los Angeles, CA. that communicated with Justice Frankfurter (that letter is on United States Supreme Court Letterhead. Chief Stone graduated Columbia Law and later became dean. Chief Stone voted with the liberal block during the “new deal”. This block was known as the three musketeers and included Justices Brandeis and Cardozo. (It should be recognized that Chief Stone was the first Chief Justice to never hold any elective office.) as the court became more entrenched in the “new deal” opposition, FDR threatened to pack the court. In response, Roberts changed his vote to support the new deal. He saved the Courts composition.  ‘
