Justice Stephen Field #38 (1816-1899), Justice William Strong #40 (1808 -1895)
Justice Stephen field #38 (1816-1899) autographs the back of a check from the bank of America for one Ms. Smith. This board includes autographed art of a portrait of Stephen Field and a photograph of a print of Fields. Field was an expert in Mexican land grants as well as a former Chief Justice of California. (He was nominated to the Supreme Court by Abraham Lincoln.) When in Stockton, California, field was accosted by a former Chief Justice he had jailed. That man was shot dead by the bodyguard. Subsequently the Supreme Court was asked to decide if it was appropriate for justices to have bodyguards. Without Fields participating….it was ok.
Justice William Strong #40 was nominated by President U.S. Grant. Strong autographs a slip of paper noting he is an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court. While on the court he was one member who decided the 1876 presidential election in favor of Rutherford b. Hayes.
