Justice Levi Woodbury #30 (1789-1851)
Justice Levi Woodbury #30 (1789-1851) future Justice Woodbury autographs a letter as the Secretary of the United States Treasury Department and does so on July 31, 1839. He signed this letter six years before he was nominated to the United States Supreme Court by President James K. Polk. It appears from the tenor of the letter that Woodbury is asking about the banks condition there in Trenton, New Jersey. Woodbury was the first Supreme Court Justice to obtain a law degree. He was 56 years old when he joined the Supreme Court. Besides the letter the board presents three likenesses of Justice Woodbury. The first is an image from a glass negative showing his likeness and in part verifying the other engravings are indeed Justice Woodbury. To Both of those engravings is attached an autograph facsimile while the print in the upper left corner is signed by the engraver. Andrew Jackson appointed Woodbury Secretary of the Navy. It is evident he also served as Secretary of the Treasury.
